10 successful actions for a world without hunger

October 14, 2026
The Hunger Project invests in people and villages in13 countries, by looking at what is possible. TowardsWorld Food Dayon 16 October we put 10 successful activities in the spotlight. And we’ll give you five tips on how to take action. So we show that sustainable change for a world without hunger is really possible.

All our programmes are local and focused on resilience, sustainable food systems and self-reliance. So people with hunger can make themselves strong for less hunger and more healthy food in their villages. These are 10 successful activities from our programmes, each contributing to a world without hunger:

1. Global workshops for mentality change.

FromI Can’ttoI CantoWe Can: If people believe they can do otherwise, they can take action to improve their lives. This mindset change is central to our self-developedVision, Commitment and Action (VCA) method. Once started in Bangladesh and now successfully applied in tens of thousands of villages in many countries. More than 2 million people followed a VCA workshop, from Mexico to Mozambique.

2. Promoting smart farming techniques in Ghana.

On demonstration fields and through training, farmers learn new farming techniques with which to improve their harvest. Hayford and his wife Vida from Ghana followed these trainings: I’ve learned so much in many ways. For example, my harvests have increased considerably because of my new knowledge of agricultural techniques.

3. Set up food banks in Malawi.

Farmers in Africalike Allan from Malawican safely store their harvest in food banks ofEpicentres, so they can sell it for a better price or use it in times of food scarcity.

4. Business lobby in Burkina Faso.

FromRight2Grow Supports The Hunger Project Burkina Faso lobby networks in their plan for better WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) and nutrition in their communities. One of these networks successfully lobbied a local water supply company: 2 wells at a school were repaired, giving the school and the local community better access to clean water.

5. Plant trees in Ethiopia.

Climate changehas a major impact on hunger. That is why we are investing in improvedclimate resistanceof rural communities. For example, aroundthe Gewocha forest in Ethiopia: Here, local volunteers last year planted over 900,000 seedlings of 14 different types of trees. And to start with food forestry, almost 253.000 trees and crops are planted on the farmyards of 1,174 households.

6. Moestuinen in India.

Village council members trained by The Hunger Projectlike Balki encourage their fellow villagers to build vegetable gardens, with seeds made available by the government. Children in primary school get a healthy lunch out of their own vegetable garden.

7. Social enterprise in Ghana.

To save it in the future without financial support from The Hunger Project, putEpicentresan own revenue stream. Like a grocery store in Ghana. The profits of thissocial enterpriseis used for electricity for the ICT centre, bank and health clinic.

8. Climate-resistant crops grow in Mozambique.

In newly built demonstration gardensin Mozambique We introduced pineapple, which as a crop is more resistant to current climate challenges. Trained volunteers show their fellow villagers how this crop grows, and how people can plant it on their own land or around their home.

9. Learn a trade in Benin.

Through professional training, people discover new sources of income. Women in Ghana learn how to make and sell soy milk. And in the countryside of Benin, young people learn a profession, such as making clothes, welding or making furniture.

10. Map growth in Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, local volunteers scan their village to see how many children have a growth retardation. They talk to the municipal administration about this, where they request a budget for sanitation. This makes the difference between malnutrition and a good start for a child, combined with information on nutrition and hygiene.
