Partnership with Blokker: 85 million coffee cups recycled in 2023

October 14, 2026

The Hunger Project and Blokker have joined forces. At Blokker you can have your aluminum coffee cups recycled. And the best part: based on this return, Blokker donates to The Hunger Project. In 2023, more than 85 million cups were recycled and The Hunger Project received 25,000 euros.

Update: Unfortunately, the recycling programme in cooperation with Blokker stopped in November 2024. You can’t return your coffee cups to Blokker. You want to keep recycling your coffee cups? Then for now we refer to Nespresso.

Blocker recycling program: Over 600,000 kilos of recycled cups.

Join us and recycle your aluminum coffee cups via Blokker. Very simple: You don’t throw your used coffee cups in the trash, you deliver them to the store. You can return aluminum cups of all brands.

Blocker recycles the whole cup without remaining waste. The coffee is separated from the cup so that the organic waste (the coffee) and the metal (the cup) can be processed separately. With the blow to the head: Based on the number of coffee cups submitted, Blokker makes a donation to The Hunger Project.

In 2023, more than 600,000 kilos of used coffee cups were collected, equivalent to some 85 million cups. Based on this return, Blokker makes a donation to The Hunger Project: Blokker-CEO Pauline Boerman handed over € 25,000 to Annelies Kanis, director of The Hunger Project.

We invest this amount in India. There we train and guide elected female village council members, so they can become strong leaders. They gain insight into their own abilities and learn all about their role and responsibilities as council member. With this knowledge and experience they make themselves strong for their village: They stand up for the poorest and work successfully on access to clean drinking water, fair food aid, well-functioning consultancies and employment. They thus improve the situation in their villages.

Impressed in India.

Annelies Kanis, Director The Hunger Project: We are very happy that in the last year too so many people turned in their coffee cups at Blokker. And that we can use the proceeds for female leaders in India, like Kanya. I met her last year, and she made a big impression on me. As chairman of her village council, Kanya made tremendous progress in her village. She arranged work permits which led to bread for 1,200 families, applied for funding for 100 homes and a bridge, had two extra classrooms built at a school and she stopped a large number of child marriages. Thanks to this contribution by Blokker, even more women like Kanya can make such an important difference to their village. I would therefore like to thank all the participants in the recycling programme very much.

Partnership Blokker and The Hunger Project.

The partnership between Blokker and The Hunger Project started in 2021. That year, Blokker started selling aluminum coffee cups with 100% Rainforest certified coffee. At the same time, Blokker launched the uniquerecycling programme, where customers can deliver aluminum coffee cups of all brands at Blokker shops. With as a blow to the head a donation to The Hunger Project based on the proceeds.Michiel Witteveen, owner of Blokker said at the start of the partnership on this: The recycling program is a win-win-win: It’s good for the environment, good for our customers and good for The Hunger Project. Together we can really do a lot.

Pride.

Pauline Boerman, CEO Blokker: For Blokker, Circularity is one of our top priorities and that is why I am extremely proud to be able to hand over such a fine amount to The Hunger Project for the third year in a row. The huge number of coffee cups submitted shows that consumers also consider recycling important. I would therefore like to thank everyone who submitted their used coffee cups to us very much, because this makes it possible for us to make a valuable contribution to this beautiful project in India.
