10 times proud: our highlights of 2024

October 14, 2026

With your support, we are taking significant steps towards a world with less poverty and hunger. From the female leadership programme in India to new activities in Malawi, and from poverty reduction in Mozambique to local lobby in Uganda: Every workshop, training and campaign is one step closer to a world without hunger. A selection of our highlights of 2024.

1. Strong impact

Research among 2,000 people in 12 programme countries (2023/72024) shows that 96% think their lives have improved since they came into contact with The Hunger Project. 62% even says that their lives have improved a lot: They have more knowledge and skills, are more financially stable and see agriculture in their village advance.

96% think their lives have improved.

2. Impressed in Mozambique

“By seeing, feeling and experiencing it for yourself, a project on paper turned into reality.”

In September, a group of Game Changers investors travelled to Mozambique. They were especially impressed by the steps in the villages of Malindile and Maculuve. A big milestone is access to clean drinking water: where people used to walk four hours for safe water, solar water points are now close to home, drinking water and irrigation water.

“As long as I know, there was a water shortage in Malindile. Particularly that safe water is now so close”, tells Lydia from Malindile.

3. Stronger together in Ghana

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

In Ghana, the community of Adomfe celebrated a great party of self-reliance that they achieved together. With training and guidance from The Hunger Project and financial support from Delicia more children go to school, more women have their own business and the clinic thrives. Adomfe has the confidence that it can move on.

4. Women’s move in India

In the Indian state of Karnataka 290 trained female village council members work together in one federation, in order to achieve more at higher political level. Darshan Surendranath from The Hunger Project India: “It is inspiring to see how these women unite as collective, how they address civil servants and demand action. They know they get things done together and they don’t stop until the job is done.”

5. Investing in learning

In July, 25 trained volunteers, government officials and staff from Peace Parks Foundation travelled to Malawi to learn from the communities around Majete Wildlife Park. They saw savings groups working with local banks, well-stocked food banks and smart irrigation systems all in their own management. The group returned full of energy and inspiration.

“I especially learned how the epicentres in Majete get everyone along. Inspiring to see how an epicenter runs on its own after self-reliance, with enough income and strong collaborations.” Mr Saulaizina, Vice-President of the Epicentre Committee in Maculuve (Mozambique)

6. Development cooperation

Against all the advice, the government wants to cut 70% on civil society organisations working to create a better world, with consequences for our work. We advocated a debate on the basis of facts rather than a gut feeling. We brought development organizations together, launched the booklet with social geographer Mirjam Vossen Beyond the Drink Talk and made the video series Fact of Fable.

With 95 companies, organisations and knowledge institutions we worked on a vision for international food security, and we signed the paper Fair, sustainable and effective gender equality as a basis for climate and biodiversity policies. In NRC supported programme manager Miet Chielens why gender equality is a prerequisite for effective policies.

7. Making the system work

“Policy without funding is like an empty promise: It sounds promising, but it leads nowhere.” “Silindile Shezi’, Right2Grow Partner CEGAA (Centre for Economic Governance and Accountability in Africa)

With the Right2Grow programme, we support communities and organisations negotiating with their local government. They examine local policies and check whether committed budgets match the ambitions for healthy food and safe drinking water. This way they can hold governments accountable for what is needed, what is promised and what is (not) delivered.

8. Eight times in action

  1. The deposit of groups 3 and 4 of IKC De Boomgaard in Mijnsherenland earned almost € 150.
  2. Students from Nyenrode Business University and The New School collected € 21,000 with resourceful actions.
  3. The fundraiser between RODA ’23 and Creators FC raised € 7,000.
  4. Many new parents asked with The Baby Project for a donation instead of maternity gifts.
  5. On Ascension Day, more than 330 employees from 26 companies gathered € 45,000 during The Zero Hunger Games.
  6. Tineke and Frank asked their guests to make a donation for their 60th birthday.
  7. The Ruys Group linked their 50th anniversary to The Hunger Project.
  8. MeeMaken used teambuilding day and Christmas packages to support us.

9. Local and nutritious food

Hunger is not only too little food, but often a lack of healthy, affordable and local food. That is why we introduce climate-proof crops and encourage the construction of vegetable gardens.

In the Enhancing Nutrition project in India trained female village council members take the lead. They request seeds from the government, so villagers can build nutritious vegetable gardens with vegetables like sweet potato, aubergine and leafy vegetables, and traditional crops like bathua (wild spinach, rich in iron, calcium and vitamin A).

“Everything we grow locally or we get from our wooded environment. So we don’t have to buy anything on the market.”Tells one of the women.
