Where does the Hunger Project work?
The Hunger Project works together with local communities on a world without hunger, in Africa, South Asia and Latin America. We support people with resources, knowledge and skills so they can take action to improve their lives. We put women at the heart of all our work, because the whole community is reaping the benefits when they get more opportunities and more control. And we involve local authorities in the development of the community, because they are closest to the people.
We run programs in 13 countries. In Africa we work in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, Senegal and Zambia. In South Asia in Bangladesh and India, and in Latin America in Peru and Mexico. In nine partner countries, including the Netherlands, we mainly fund these programmes: Australia, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands, New Zealand, United States, Sweden and Switzerland. Each country has an independent office with local staff and a national administration. Its headquarters are located in the United States.
Because the conditions vary, our approach varies from country to country and from programme to programme. We go for customization that fits the local context. In India, for example, we guide women to a role as village councilman, we build sand dams for safe water together with the community in Malawi, and we build peace in northern Uganda, where decades of conflicts have left deep wounds.
