Additional contributions National Postcode Lottery.
Last week the National Postal Code Lottery surprised us with a beautiful amount of € 1.6 million! The participants of the Postcode Lottery make it possible for us to use the projectWater Winning12 sand dams in Burkina Faso, Benin, Mozambique and Malawi. With this, 12,000 households will have direct access to clean drinking water and water for agriculture, as well as 200,000 villagers. They also increased their annual contribution to 600,000 euros.
Water is vital.
Unpredictable rain showers caused by climate change, flush harvesting and even whole fields away. And because of more extreme heat and more and more prolonged periods of drought, the groundwater level drops and the soil dries out of the rainy season. Harvesting fails and families lose their food supply and income. Therefore access to safe water is essential to a world without hunger.
Sand dams.
Sand dams are a smart, cheap and sustainable solution that increases access to water. With a sand dam, rainwater can be collected from which the community can tap safe, filtered water for at least a year. Around the dam villagers can also build vegetable gardens, which they can irrigate with the sand dam water in dry times. So they can eat healthier and more varied and earn extra money selling fruit and vegetables. Moreover, women and girls lose much less time in getting water. Time they can spend on other important things, such as education, earning an income or their families.
Increase annual contribution.
An equally big surprise was the report that our annual contribution from the Postal Code lottery is also being increased, from 500,000 to 600,000 euros. That contribution will allow us to do what is necessary, where it is needed now. From trust in our mission and our work to put an end to hunger and poverty. We are extremely happy that all this important work is made possible by the contribution of the participants of the Postcode Lottery.
